After Hours Trading

September 20, 2010 – 3:36 pm

After hours trading has many people confused. Normal stock trading occurs during business hours when the exchanges are open on Wall Street and that is when the vast majority of stock trades take place but when exchanges are closed how does trading happen?

Most of it is done because we are in a world global environment. Overseas trading occurs 24 hours day. The exchange in Germany or Japan has U.S. corporations listed just as the U.S. exchanges have foreign corporations. When those markets are open and we are closed or overlap, trades happen.

Also, if someone owns a stock they can sell to anyone else at anytime they want. What is to stop you from selling your shares of Intel to the guy down the street on the weekend. You can do it, you just have to report it.

After hours trading has and continues to grow and because of this. There have been discussions of keeping our exchanges open 24 hours a day. I don’t think that will happen any time soon but it could happen. The world is getting smaller and that is not going to change.

Good Trading
