There is not much in the way of new economic statistics out this week but events in Europe certainly make for a nervous market.
Greece reported a weaker economy than expected, shrinking by 5%. That will make it harder for them to meet deficit targets. England fell back into recession unexpectedly for the first quarter as well. It is very difficult for the various EU countries to pull themselves out of a recessionary cycle without government spending but they have spent so much over the years that no one wants to buy their debt. Without that, spending governments lose a strong piece of their ability to jump start their economy. The result is what we are seeing in parts of the EU, weaker economies.
Meanwhile here in the U.S. our loose money policy is pushing our economy along. It is a slow process and Europe is not helping, but we are growing. Then there is Asia with China and India facing slowing economies. However, both countries have started to ease money policies which should work, and both have the ability, unlike Europe, to do so.

Driving the market this week will be earnings reports and news coming from outside the U.S. France’s election is heating up and a Socialist is channeling President Sarkozy. The stock market hates change so it reacted as the Socialist, if elected, promises to ease up on stringent spending cuts.
Politics in Europe are getting more extreme as those out of power make populist promises to kick out the ones in power who made unpopular fiscal decisions. Of course if the populists get elected they too will have to make hard choices. Meanwhile markets will show their displeasure. Volatility becomes more extreme to match the extreme rhetoric spewed from pandering politicos.
With little economic news coming out of the U.S. this week any news out of Europe and China will have an outsized effect on stock prices. Earnings have been better than expected but that expectation was sharply ratcheted downward in the weeks and months before earnings started to be reported so they may not have as much impact compared to what is going on in Europe and Asia. The better than expected numbers have been an offsetting factor and guidance for the future over all has been upbeat.
Tracking and understanding what moves markets is a never ending.

As our market works through the earnings season and the worry over Europe, it is Asia we should look to for signs of improvement. The two largest populations in the world, China and India, are beginning to react to their slowed economies. Both are still growing and both have dealt with inflation concerns but are now willing and motivated to spur growth. That should eventually overpower the weakness in Europe.
It certainly appears that the way out of the U.S. slow growth funk will be coming from Asia and a finally improving housing market but it is going to take time. The actual improving numbers in the U.S may not show up until late this year or early next year but the stock market will react positively before that.
The question, as it has been for some time, is will Europe will drag the rest of the world down to recession with them? It appears the answer will be no, but it is still a possibility.
